Comparison of Hydrothermally-Grown vs Electrodeposited Cobalt Sulfide Nanostructures as Modified Electrodes for Oxygen Evolution and Electrochemical Sensing Applications

A wide range of electrocatalysts have been developed and implemented for electrochemical applications over the last decades, with researchers typically using either a conventional synthesis method (followed by drop-casting or spray-coating onto electrode), directly electrodepositing catalyst. However, clear comparison different materials techniques, how this affects applications, has less explored. Herein, we report direct fabricated cobalt sulfide (CoS) nanostructure-based electrodes prepared two methods applications: (a) water splitting (b) glucose sensing. CoS is grown in form nanoflowers nanosheets via facile one-pot hydrothermal (HT) electrodeposition (ED) methods, respectively. Characterization performed X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), photoelectron (XPS). It observed that as-fabricated CoS-ED electrode demonstrated enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, lower overpotential (∼166 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), charge transfer resistance (∼372 Ω), Tafel slope (86 dec −1 better stability compared to CoS-HT electrode. Moreover, electrode-based sensor also exhibited higher sensitivity, selectivity, good detection sensor.
